Halley’s Comet, Grace Kelly, and ‘The Shot Heard Round the World’


I need a break from politics. Waco and the Oklahoma City bombing have been detailed in the news today, so here are some other facts about this day in history.

1775 – The American War for Independence begins at Lexington Common in Massachusetts, with the “shot heard round the world."

1782 - John Adams secures the Dutch Republic's recognition of the United States as an independent government and the house he purchased in The Hague, Netherlands becomes the first American embassy.

1897 - John McDermott of New York wins the first Boston Marathon won in 2:55:10.

1910 - Halley's comet makes a spectacular return trip.

1939 - Connecticut approves the Bill of Rights.

1951 – Gen. Douglas MacArthur ends his military career with an address to Congress. “Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.”

1956 - Actress Grace Kelly weds Monaco's Prince Rainier III.

1981 – The Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings play to a 2-2 tie after 32 innings. The longest minor league game ever played began on Saturday, April 18, and was suspended at 4:07 AM on April 19. The Paw Sox finally won 3-2 in the 33rd inning during the next scheduled game between the two teams on June 23.

1982 – NASA names Sally Ride the agency’s first female astronaut.

I understand! It seems like the M.O. is to spam us with so much bad government that we get worn out. Interesting fact sheet here thanks for that! Additionally i saw that you posted on my Financial Reform article. I didn't even read the comment i just approved it, then went back to read it, and it has vanished. I have no idea why. If it doesn't show up thats why. Big apologies OTC!.

No apologies necessary, Citizen. I commented that our elected representatives in D.C. often don't consider the unintended consequences of their legislation.
